The 15 Minute Observation Period Post Vaccination
The 15-minute waiting period is based on the timing of two rare but serious reactions:
Anaphylaxis:
Severe allergic reactions almost always happen within minutes of the injection. If it occurs while you are still in the clinic, staff have adrenaline (EpiPens) on hand to treat it immediately.
Vasovagal syncope (fainting):
Fainting is more common than allergic reactions. Evidence shows about 80% of post-vaccination faints happen within the first 15 minutes. If you faint while driving or walking outside the clinic, the risk of injury is much higher.
Side effects after immunisation
Vaccines, like any medication can have side effects. Most reactions, such as low-grade fever and pain at the injection site are mild, usually short lasting, and do not require special treatment.
There is a very small risk of a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to any vaccine. You should stay at the clinic or medical surgery for at least 15 minutes following immunisation in case further treatment is required.
Ask your vaccination provider about side effects from specific vaccines.
